सासाराम:
वैदिक काल में काशी राज्य का हिस्सा रहे शाहाबाद के इस प्राचीन शहर का गौरवशाली इतिहास रहा है I प्राचीन मान्यताओं के अनुसार यहाँ हजारों बाग-बगीचे थे इसलिए इस जगह को कई नामों से पुकारा जाता रहा होगा, तब शायद इसका नाम ‘सहस्त्र नाम’ कहा जाने लगा I आगे चलकर यही नाम अपभ्रंश होता हुआ सासाराम कहलाया I एक, कुछ सौ वर्षों पुरानी कहानी ये भी है है कि पूर्व में इसे शाह सराय कहा जाता था I उत्तर प्रदेश की ओर बिहार में प्रवेश का मुख्य मार्ग भी यहीं से गुजर कर जाता था I प्राचीन समय में जब व्यापारी, यात्री एक राज्य से दूसरे राज्य जाते थे तो इसी रास्ते से होकर जाते थे I आज का ग्रैंड ट्रंक रोड जब नहीं बना था तब भी कोई तो मार्ग रहा ही होगा ! सासाराम का धार्मिक और ऐतिहासिक महत्व वैदिक काल से ही रहा I पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार भगवान शंकर जब अपनी पत्नी सती के मृत शारीर को लेकर तीनों लोक में घूम रहे थे तब सम्पूर्ण श्रृष्टि भयाकुल हो गई थी I तभी देवताओं के अनुरोध पर भगवान विष्णु ने सुदर्शन चक्र से माता सती के शारीर को खंडित किया था I मान्यता है कि इस जगह पर माता सती की दाहिनी आँख गिरी थी I कहा जाता है कि महर्षि विश्वामित्र जी के द्वारा इस पीठ का नाम ताराचंडी रखा गया I इस मंदिर का उल्लेख विभिन्न प्राचीन पांडुलिपियों में मिलता है, यहीं पर भगवान परशुराम ने सहस्त्रबाहु को पराजित कर माँ तारा की उपासना की थी I इसी शक्तिपीठ में माँ ताराचंडी बालिका के रूप में प्रकट हुई थी और चंड राक्षस का वद्ध करके चंडी कहलाई I इसी तरह गुप्ताधाम वही स्थान है जहाँ भगवन शंकर भस्मासुर से बचने के लिए आकर छुपे थे I
इस शहर के पिछले 500 वर्षों के ऐतिहासिक घटनाक्रम को देखने से ये पता चलता है कि लगातार सत्ता के लिए लगातार संघर्ष और सत्ता परिवर्तन होता रहा I इन सभी घटनाओं के विस्तार में नहीं जाकर हम यहाँ शेर शाह सूरी का जिक्र अवश्य करेंगे क्योंकि शेर शाह द्वारा बनवाए गए ग्रैंड ट्रंक रोड ने उन्हें एक दूरदर्शी शासक के रूप में पहचान दिलाई I
